Baby Miles

This little guy was pretty new, I think he had been born just a few days before our field trip on Feb 21. I liked a lot about this image but my focus must be off a little because his neck is very sharp but not the end of his nose....I probably needed a smaller aperture.

Nikon D200, 70 -200mm 2.8 at f2.8 and 1/500th, ISO 320

  1. If you had changed to F6.7 you might have gotten his nose in focus. You were not that far away so DOF is still pretty shallow. I'm not sure you would still have as pleasing a BG at that aperture, but it would be close.

Either way, I like the shot. Did you try a vertical crop, just to see what it looked like?.

  2. Maybe even f4 or 5.6 would have given me more depth, but I really wanted to blur the background. I tried a square crop, not a vertical, and I liked that but decided I wanted the repeating fenceposts in the background so left as many as I could.
This image would not make a good print so I didn't do that much with it.

  3. Would this photo be improved by removing the fence at the bottom? It seems to distract from the subject. As to the background, I am not sure how much more blur you need. As it is, the background is very soft and muted.
