Tiny Australian Violet

This tiny flower is blooming in a ground cover at my parent's house. The bloom is only about half of an inch in size and looks like a violet to me, but I am not sure.  My mom is out of town or I would ask her!
Nikon D700, 60mm macro lens at f7.1 and 1/125th, ISO 200
Frame added as a layer and masked off of the center.

  1. Nice macro Cindi. To me this one is all about the composition. The background in the shot really complements and highlights the subject.

  2. Pansy! Not you, the flower. I like the edge, simple subject and OOF background.

  3. Thanks Doug, I changed it. I guess that shows I am not much of a gardener...

  4. I like the complementary colors and the blurred background. I also like the edge effect and vignetting.

Did you get that much background blur at f/7.1, or did you add some blur in post?

  5. No, but you are a pretty good photographer.

  6. Thanks Doug! But evidently I do know a little about flowers --- I talked to my mom and she identified it as an Australian Violet. Very different from an African Violet and it does look like a tiny pansy but it reminded me of the wild violets that grew in the woods in Nacogdoches where I went to college. Charlie, I have no idea why there is so much background blur at f7.1. I did not do that in post processing. I was very close to the bloom but the background was right behind it and I was using a macro lens. The D700 is new to me and I am just learning how it shoots differently from my previous camera.
