Little J finally wound down, when the sun did. He had some adorable expressions while sitting in this chair on the deck, but I had major technical issues and missed them all :(.
I'd be interested in knowing how you set up the light(s) for this one! I'm terrible at trying to guess but were there two? Camera right and left at about 45 degrees?
There may have been two lights for this shot but maybe not --- I had a home-made "Fong" on a bracket above my camera for fill and Mike was in the background quite a ways back with my softbox/flash on a stick but it did not always fire, took longer to recharge. Plus it was so far back I am not sure it even reached J. I can see two catchlights in his eye on his right in the RAW file but one could be a reflection from a window there. The Fong seemed to work well with my 50mm 1.8 lens and let me get close enough for it to add just a little fill light. Babies and children have such shallow faces that I think you don't need to fill in any deep shadows as much as adults. However, in many shots I needed more fill and less ambient so will have to work on those manual settings...I also should have checked the LCD more. In my defense, many shots looked good on that small screen but when I loaded the images on the computer and looked more closely they are not sharp due to his movement blur which the flash did not prevent. I have so much to learn (and remember!)
Nice portrait. The lighting is very natural looking. The background really fits him. His pose seems very natural--of course all things are natural at that age. Good work.
“A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense, and is, thereby, a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety” -Ansel Adams
When my only child went off to college in 2004, I started taking photography classes. First through Continuing Education, then 2 black and white film classes. After that I joined the Bay Area Photo Club and started learning about digital photography. Since the fall of 2009 I have been involved in animal advocacy and rescue and I also photograph homeless animals for 3 different groups. My husband of 33 years is my biggest supporter, in all ways, and I could not pursue this hobby without him.
Very nice Cindi!

Well done!

ReplyDeleteThanks Cindi!
ReplyDeleteJust as I suspected...my guess on the lighting wasn't even close! :-)
Hopefully we'll at least avoid making the same mistakes on our next shoot!
Cheers!
